About Lawrence Alma-Tadema
The Dutch-born painter Lawrence Alma-Tadema was popular in the 19th century for his artistic works. Some of his most well-received works were the ones with themes of the Roman Empire, including its lows and highs.
Training
Alma-Tadema was first trained by a local painter hired by his family. He later moved to Belgium where he had his education at the Royal Academy of Antwerp. He studied arts at the academy. The Dutch painter moved to London, where he did most of his work.
Personal Life
He was born in the Netherlands to Hinke Dirks Brouwer and Pieter Jiltes Tadema. He grew up with five siblings, including three stepbrothers.
In 1863, he was joined in holy matrimony with Marie-Pauline Gressin-Dumoulin de Boisgirard, the daughter of French writer and journalist Eugène Gressin-Dumoulin The untimely death of Marie-Pauline in 1869 meant that the couple were married for only 6 years. By his wife, he had three children, including British suffragette Anna and British writer Laurence.
Trivia
The Victorian painter received major honors in his lifetime, including the Order of Merit. He was also made an academician at the Royal Academy of Arts.
Did you know?
Alma-Tadema was diagnosed with tuberculosis and suffered a nervous breakdown as a result. This led him to pursue a career as an artist after his recovery.
