About Lawrence Kohlberg
American psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg blazed a trail in the fields of psychology and education when he decided to study moral development in children from a cognitive stance. Building on predecessor Jean Piaget’s description of moral development in children, he formulated his now-famous theory of stages of moral development. In doing his research, he observed 72 white boys and arrived at his six stages of how the moral reasoning of children is developed. He also taught at the University of Chicago (Psychology Department) and the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Family life
His Christian German chemist mother, Charlotte Albrecht was the second wife of his Jewish German entrepreneur father. He was the couple’s youngest child. He had three siblings.
How did Lawrence Kohlberg die?
A parasitic infection he contracted in 1971 while carrying out research tormented his physical and mental well-being for the rest of his life. It caused severe pain and treating it with medication also sent him into depression many times. He committed suicide on January 19, 1987.
