About Lawrence Sperry
In 1914, Lawrence Sperry transformed the aviation industry for good, with his invention of the autopilot.
Life
As a young boy, Sperry developed an interest in aviation. The son of the co-inventor of the gyrocompass, he also developed the artificial horizon, a feature that is still used in modern-day aircrafts.
He married actress Winifred Allen in 1918 and the pair were regarded as “the first couple to take an aerial honeymoon.”
Sperry’s life was cut short when in 1923, his aircraft travelling from the UK to France never arrived. His body was found a year later in the English Channel.
Legacy
Sperry was allegedly the first member of the Mile High Club. In 1979, he was inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame in San Diego. He was also inducted into the Naval Aviation Hall of Honor in 1992.
