About Lawrence Welk
Lawrence Welk was an American musician, bandleader, accordionist and television impresario. His kind of music became known as “champagne music” by his fans. Prior to the formation of The Lawrence Welk Orchestra, he had led big bands such as the Honolulu Fruit Gum Orchestra and the Hotsy Totsy Boys. For over 30 years (1951 to 1982), he hosted the televised musical variety show, “The Lawrence Welk Show”.
Family Life
He was one of eight children born to Christiana Schwahn and Ludwig Welk, ethnic German immigrants from Odessa, Russian Empire. He and Fern Renner, his wife of 61 years had three children.
Achievements
He was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and is an inductee of the International Polka Music Hall of Fame. He was a recipient of the Horatio Alger Award in 1967.
Death
He died at 99 years old from pneumonia on 17 May 2002.
