About Lech Wałęsa
Before Polish statesman Lech Wałęsa got into the limelight, he was just a regular guy working as an electrician for the Lenin Shipyard. He first mobilized his co-workers and fought for their rights as a trade-union activist.
He was arrested frequently for his activism but he persisted and immensely contributed to Poland’s shift from communism to liberal democracy.
In 1990, he became his country’s first president to be elected democratically. He is the founder of the NGO, Lech Wałęsa Institute.
Family Life
He was born to Feliksa Walesa Kamienska and Boleslaw Walesa, a carpenter. He was raised alongside three siblings and three half-siblings from his mother’s second marriage following his father’s death.
He has been married to Miroslawa Danuta Golos since 1969. They are parents to eight children.
Achievements
He was a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983.
Trivia
Walesa and Danuta’s lives in the 1970s and 1980s were the focus of the film “Walesa: Man of Hope”.
