About Lee Elder
Due to his love for golf, Lee Elder occasionally skipped classes to go serve as a caddie. At age 16, he played his first 18 holes match. His breakthrough came years later when he played against former boxing champion Joe Louis. It was during their match that he was discovered by Louis’ trainer and former golfer Ted Rhodes.
In 1961, he joined the Professional Golfers' Association of America, and eight years later he participated in his first match. He went on to feature in the South African PGA Championship in 1971, and recorded his first PGA Tour win three years later. Before retiring from the sport, he had won the tournament on four different occasions.
Family
He spent his early years with parents Almeta and Charles Elder. In 1966, he married golfer Rose Harper, who later worked as his manager.

Achievements
He was the recipient of the Bob Jones Award in 2019.
Trivia
He’s the first black-American to participate in the renowned Masters Tournament.
In 1974, he established a self-named educational fund.
