About Leland Stanford
Leland Stanford was one of the people who cashed in big during the Gold Rush in California in the 1850s. Originally a practicing lawyer, he made the decision to move to California after his law library got burnt in 1852. He became a wealthy merchant and wholesaler before venturing into politics. He served as the 8th Governor of California (1862-1863) and then as the United States Senator from California (1885-1893). He is also known as a co-founder of Stanford University.
Family Life
He and his seven siblings were raised in New York. From 1850 until his death, he was married to Jane Elizabeth Lathrop, with whom he co-founded Stanford University. The school was named after their only child, Leland Stanford Jr., who died at age 15 from typhoid fever.
Death
He died on June 21, 1893 from heart failure.
