About Lena Horne
Lena Horne was a four-time Grammy Award-winning American singer and actress. Living in an era where people of African-American descent were still frowned upon in the entertainment industry, Horne was still able to appear in a number of films before losing interest in Hollywood in favor of performing in nightclubs, some of those films include: Cabin in the Sky (1943), Ziegfield Follies (1946), Death of a Gunfighter (1969), and The Wiz (1978). After releasing numerous albums and performing in several nightclubs like the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas and Waldorf-Astoria in New York, Horne capped her career with the acclaimed Broadway musical Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music in 1981.
Trivia
Horne had the distinction as the first ever African-American artist to receive a long-term contract from a major Hollywood studio (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) in 1942.
