Personal Life
Leonard Randolph Wilkens was the name he was given when he was born, and he was born to an Irish American mother and an African American father. He was enrolled at Boys High School where he played basketball. Later on in his life, he met Marilyn Reed and fell in love with her. In 1962, he married her and birthed a child together with her.
Career
While studying at Providence College, he played basketball for the school. In 1960, he got drafted by St Louis Hawks and was with them for about eight years before moving to Seattle SuperSonics. He was part of the team for about four years before playing for Cleveland Cavaliers.
In 1974, he joined Portland Trail Blazers. Wilkens’ playing career ended that year, then he started working as a coach for Seattle Supersonics in 1969 before moving on to Portland Trail Blazers then back to Seattle Supersonics. Other teams he has worked with include Cleveland Cavaliers, Toronto Raptors and New York Knicks.
Achievements
In 1971, the American was named NBA All-Star Game MVP then he was named NBA Coach of the year in 1994 before he was awarded the 2011 Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award.
