About Lenore Kandel
Lenore Kandel was a veteran American poet of the 19th century. She was strongly affiliated with the “Hippie” and “Beat Generation” counterculture and literary movement.
Early life & Education
The poet was born in New York City, USA. During childhood, she lived with her family in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and later moved to Los Angeles to stay with her father. However, she returned to her native, New York, to enroll on scholarship in “The New School for Social Research” for almost four years.
Major Works
In 1966, she rose to fame as an author when she released her poetry work, “The Love Book.” The book contains four primary poems. Most controversial among them is the threefold poem, “To Fuck with Love.” The poem provoked censorship, which made the police stop its sales since it violated the state’s obscenity laws. However, the book sold well after the court eventually cleared it.
In 1967, she released one of her famous full-length poem books, “Word Alchemy.” In addition, she shared her poems at numerous programs and events between 1960 and 1970.
Marriage & Death
She was married to the renowned poet Billy Fritsch.
She died from lung cancer at age 77 on 18 October 2009 in San Francisco, California.
