Léon Bloy Rank
About Léon Bloy
In the late 1860s, French novelist Léon Bloy converted to Catholicism and his new-found faith translated into his written works, which were often controversial and caused him to fall out with the literary community.
Biography
Bloy was the second child born to Jean-Baptiste Bloy and Anne-Marie Carreau. He spent most of his youth as an agnostic and developed a deep resentment for the Catholic Church. In 1864, he moved to Paris to teach. Four years later, he met the Catholic author Barbey d’Aurevilly who became his mentor. Bloy converted shortly after meeting Barbey.
Over the years, he was known for being a bigot and having regular temper outbursts. His first book “Le Désespéré” attacked the notion of rationalism, causing him to fall out with many other writers, including Ernest Renan and Anatole France. He passed away in 1917.
Works
The French author wrote two novels, “Le Désespéré” and “La Femme pauvre.” He also wrote several essays and short stories.
