About Léon Blum
French socialist André Léon Blum was the first Jew to render his service 3 times as the Prime Minister of France. As such, he faced stiff opposition from many anti-semitic elements during his tenure of office.
Early Life
Blum was born into a middle-class Jewish family and was predominantly raised by his father, Abraham Blum. The politician first enrolled in École Normale Supérieure in 1990 but dropped out to pursue Law at the University of Paris, where he graduated as a Lawyer and Literary critic in 1905 and 1907 respectively.
Career
Blum's political career began in 1914 when he became the assistant to the Socialist Minister of Public Works. He was a constant member of the French Section of the Workers International party. He rose to become the Deputy Prime Minister of France in 1948. Blum was also the Prime Minister of France from 1936 to 1937 and then, 1946 to 1947.
Personal Life
The politician married 3 times. First, to Lise Bloch from 1896 to 1931, then he married Therese Blum from 1932 to 1938 and finally married Jeanne Blum from 1943 to 1950. Blum passed on in 1950.
