About Leon Czolgosz
After losing his mother at the age of 10, Leon Czolgosz began working in factories during his teens. He was affected by the unpopular economic crash in 1893 which saw him join a number of socialist groups such as the Sila Club, and the Knights of the Golden Eagle. It was during this stage that he started developing a love for anarchism.
Assassination
He became a public enemy in 1901 when he shot and eventually killed then President of the United States, William McKinley. The President was one of the guests of the Pan-American Exposition fair. Prior to the start of the program, McKinley took some time to shake hands with the people at the event. It was during that period that Czolgosz had the opportunity to fire at him at a very close distance. McKinley died six days after the incident.
He was later arrested, and then executed by electric chair at the Auburn Prison.
Family
His parents Mary Nowak and Paul Czolgosz were Polish-Americans. He had seven other siblings including Waldek who witnessed his execution.
Trivia
In his last words he indicated that “I killed the President because he was the enemy of the good people”.
