About Léon Degrelle
Leon Degrelle was the youngest statesman on the continent during the turbulent years before World War II, yet as an Eastern Front soldier, he rose to become the most well-known foreign volunteer in the entire German military.
Background
He received a diploma of candidacy in philosophy and literature from the Catholic University of Leuven. He drafted pro-monarchy, clericalist booklets in 1928, which attracted the interest of Belgian priest Norbert Wallez.
He assisted the German occupying forces in World War II. In Belgium, municipal governments and publications were taken over by the Rexists under his leadership.
Degrelle was found guilty and sentenced to death in absentia post WWII but fled to Spain and was shielded by Francisco Franco and acquired Spanish citizenship.
He succumbed to a heart attack in 1994 after decades of comfortable living in Spain.
Trivia
Hitler dubbed Degrelle "Volksführer of the Walloons" in November 1944.
