Background and Education
The renowned author, born in 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland, was the son of Wolf William Uris and Anna Uris, both of Jewish American descent. At the age of 6, he wrote an operetta inspired by his dog’s death. He attended high school in Norfolk, Virginia but could never complete it since he kept falling into English.
Exodus (1958) and Other Major Career Highlights
As he found school a bit of a challenge, he decided to enlist in the United States Marine Corps, where he was placed in New Zealand and fought as a radioman in combat in 1944 in World War II.
After he was released from service, he worked for a newspaper, where he developed his writing skills. With his experience in the war, he wrote his first novel, “The Angry Hills”.
Ultimately, his best-selling books were “Exodus” and “Mila”. In “Exodus”, Leon Uris tells the story of how the State of Israel was founded. The novel, which was published by Doubleday in 1958, received very positive reviews, and it quickly became a bestseller in the United States, selling millions of copies in the process.
Personal Life
Leon was married 3 times in his lifetime and divorced twice. His first marriage, which was to Betty Beck, lasted from 1945 to 1968. He was married to Marjorie Edwards from 1968 until she tragically took her life in 1969. A year later, he tied the knot with Jill Peabody. The marriage lasted until 1988.
Leon died at the age of 78 due to kidney failure. The famous author was survived by 5 children.
