About Leonel Fernández
Leonel was elected the 50th and 52nd Dominican president with a total of twelve years in three terms.
Family and Education
He was born to José Antonio Fernández Collado and Yolanda Reyna Romero.
Leonel studied law at Autonomous University of Santo Domingo and worked in teaching and journalism prior to politics.
He has three children: two from his first marriage with Rocio Quezada and a third child from his second marriage, which was to Margarita Lizardo.
Ascension to Power
Following strong opposition by defeated Jose Francisco in 1994, re-elected Joaquin Balaguer declined to run in the rescheduled 1996 election under the Pact for Democracy agreement. Leonel stood in for the Dominican Liberation Party to win in the runoff against two major opponents.
He was reelected for a second term in 2004, and a third term in 2008.
Policies
Leonel founded the resource and training center called FUNGLODE and pursued economic reforms that helped to pull inflation down to single digits.
Honors
After hosting the 2008 Rio Group Summit, which ended a Colombian-Ecuador territory dispute, he earned a World Peace Culture Award.
