About Leonora Carrington
Considered by many as one of the last true surrealist artists and author, Leonora Carrington made history when her picture of a juggler fetched $713, 000 at an auction. The sale was reportedly the most money ever spent on a surrealist artist's work.
Background
A copy of Herbert Read's "Surrealism" (1936), which her mother gifted her, introduced her to Surrealism. In Florence, she started studying painting with access to the world's top art galleries.
Her famous self-portrait “The Inn of the Dawn Horse” was created in 1937–1938, two years after she first met artists like Pablo Picasso and André Breton.
“The House of Fear” (1938), published as a chapbook, "The Debutante," first published in 1940, and "The Oval Lady"(1938) are a few short stories she penned.
Her eerie, autobiographical, puzzling paintings that feature symbols of sorcery, metamorphosis, and alchemy are what make her most famous as an artist.
