About Leontyne Price
Leontyne Price, born Mary Violet Leontyne Price, is recognized for having been the first African American operatic soprano to achieve international acclamation. A product of Juilliard, it was there that she came to the attention of composer Virgil Thompson who hired her for his popular “Four Saints in Three Acts”. She was the first African American leading performer at the Metropolitan Opera (in New York City) and La Scala (Milan, Italy). Her most memorable roles include the title character in “Aida”, Leonora in “Il trovatore”, Amelia in “Un ballo in maschera” and Cleopatra in “Giulio Cesare”.
Family Life
Her parents James Anthony and Katherine Baker worked as a midwife and a carpenter respectively. She was raised in Mississippi alongside a younger brother named George. She was married to bass-baritone concert singer William Warfield from 1952 to 1973.
Achievements
Her accolades include the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of Arts, 19 Grammy Awards and a Spingarn Medal.
Trivia
She was featured in a 2017 documentary titled “The Opera House” at 90 years old.
