About Leopold Mannes
Raised by musician parents, Leopold Mannes grew up as a lover of music. He however made a name for himself in the film industry. He was best known as one of the creators of the Kodachrome color film. He achieved this success with support from fellow musician Leopold Godowsky Jr.
The two established a laboratory in 1924 before joining Eastman Kodak six years later. As a musician, he was admired for his harmonious piano sounds.
Family
His parents Clara Mannes and David Mannes were the founders of the New York-based Mannes College of Music. He was also the grandson of Leopold Damrosch, a popular conductor. His uncles were Frank Damrosch, and Walter Damrosch who were also conductors.
Education
He was trained at Harvard University.
Recognitions
Mannes, in 2005, was selected into the prestigious National Inventors Hall of Fame.
Trivia
He and Godowsky decided to work on the reversal film after watching “Our Navy” in 1917.
