Leopold Ranke, famously known as Leopold von Ranke, was a highly accurate and renowned German historian during the 19th century. He is considered the founder of contemporary source-based history and a pivotal figure in shaping the historical profession.
Early Life & Education
He was initially home-schooled and later enrolled in the Schulpforta high school. He also attended the University of Leipzig, where he read Lutheran theology and Classics.
Career Highlights & Major Works
Between 1817 and 1825, he taught classics at the prestigious “Friedrichs Gymnasium.” During this period, his interest in history was greatly increased, launching his historical career in 1824 with the release of his book “Histories of the Latin and Teutonic Peoples from 1494 to 1514.”
Ranke was one of the earliest historians to organize a historical seminar. Ranke’s literary techniques greatly influenced western historiography. His notable works included “The Popes of Rome, Their Church and State in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries,” “French History Mainly in the sixteenth and seventeenth Centuries,” and “History of England Principally in the 16th and 17th Centuries.”
In 1865, the King of Prussia added “von” to his name to mark him as an ennobled person.
Death
He died in Berlin, the German Empire.
