About Leopold von Sacher-Masoch
Unbeknownst to many, the term "masochism" originates from Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, the Austrian writer, editor, and journalist of the 19th century.
He agreed to be his mistress's slave for six months in 1869 in exchange for her wearing fur as often as possible, per the terms of their contract, which they signed.
Before passing away in 1895 at the age of fifty-nine, he had authored more than 78 novels as well as a number of articles, some of which supported women's suffrage.
Birth and Education
Born to an Austrian noblewoman and a police director, he received a degree in philosophy and history.
Career
Many short stories of his were collected in 1869 under the heading "Legacy of Cain". These tales revealed his perspective on the world and on life. Only the first two of the six intended volumes were ever finished.
From October 1881 to September 1885, he served as editor of the Leipzig-based literary magazine Auf der Höhe. Internationale Review. Articles from this magazine supported women's rights while also assisting Jews in Saxony to integrate into the community.

The term “masochism” was coined by Austrian psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing. Masoch was said to have been very displeased when he found out that his name was associated to the term.
