About Leroy Neiman
Leroy Neiman came to the limelight as a result of his exceptional paintings of athletes and sporting events. He made paintings of events such as the Super Bowl, Kentucky Derby and the Ryder Cup.
Family and Education
He was the son of Charles Julius Runquist and Lydia Sophia Serline. He derived his surname from his step-father after his biological father abandoned his family. He attended St. Paul School of Art and School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
He exchanged wedding vows with Janet Byrne in 1957.
Career
His painting skills were noticed when he served as a cook during the Second World War. He served as a teacher at an art institute for about ten years until he landed a job as a contributor to Playboy magazine. The offer came from the founder of the magazine Hugh Hefner. His first work at the magazine was his design of the Femlin character for the party jokes page of the magazine. He used tools like pencil drawings, lithographs, pastels and watercolor for his sketches.
One of his artwork in the music industry was the logo he illustrated on “Busker Alley”, a musical created by the Sherman brothers.
As part of his artwork, he supported several art activities, especially those for underprivileged children. He also established art institutions in colleges like the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies which can be found in Columbia University.
Awards
Neiman was awarded the highest state honor of the Order of Lincoln. He received this award from the Governor of Illinois in 2009.
Trivia
His right leg was amputated as a result of arterial insufficiency.
