Family
He was born to Russian parents who migrated to America. He had a daughter with his Jewish wife, Edith Beckerman.
Contributions
After a minor job as an usher in a Cleveland theatre, Wasserman entered Hollywood as a booking agent for Jule Stein’s Music Corporation of America (MCA) where he was credited with the “star system” and improving existing “film packaging” practices where artists were shared across production firms.
In 1962, he bought Universal Studios and Decca Records and merged them with MCA. He also created the Universal CityWalk in 1993, and served as agent for Ronald Reagan (later US President from 1981 to 1989) who won the presidency of Screen Actors Guild.
Honors
He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Bill Clinton in 1995. A statue of him was also erected at the Universal Studios in Florida.
