Captain Yancey was a pioneering figure in aviation in the 20th century United States. As an aviator and air navigator, he toured the U.S., Central America and the Caribbean in a Pitcairn autogyro. He has also authored a number of books on aviation.
Notable Facts
In 1930, aboard a Stinson monoplane, Lewis Yancey and William H. Alexander became the first ever to fly from New York to Bermuda. In late 1931, Yancey flew the newly built Pitcairn autogyro for 6,500 miles. He made transits in 21 states and landed in 38 states around the U.S. He also flew with zoologist Richard Archbold from the American Museum of Natural History, in Manhattan to New Guinea.
Recognition
Yancey was awarded a medal from the U.S. Navy for his contributions to meteorology during World War I.
