About Lhasa de Sela
Lhasa de Sela was an award-winning singer, performing from 1985 and 2009. She was of Mexican, American, and Canadian origin and had quite the nomadic lifestyle, as she spent most of her adult years living between Canada and France. Lhasa’s first album, “La Llorona” earned her a Félix Award and a Juno Award.
Early Life and Music Career
When she was 13 years old, Lhasa moved with her mother and sisters to San Francisco after her parents separated. She took up singing in a café. However, it wasn’t until a trip to visit her sisters in Canada that she became deeply interested in French culture and started performing in local bars.
Lhasa’s music career took off in 1997 after releasing “La Llorona.” She released two other albums called “The Living Road” and “Lhasa.” She also wrote a French book called “La Route Chante”, where she told stories of her life while performing with her sisters, and her childhood.
Death
After a long battle with breast cancer, Lhasa passed away at age 37 leaving behind her partner Ryan Morey, her parents and siblings.
