About Liliuokalani
Liliuokalani was the first and only female monarch of the Kingdom of Hawaiʻi. She assumed the throne in 1891 after her older brother King Kalākaua died. She reigned as Queen from that time until the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893.
Personal Life
In 1862, she got married to John Owen Dominis. Since she could not give birth to any children of her own, she adopted three children.
Trivia
She was also an accomplished musician, who composed several songs during her lifetime. Her most famous song Aloha ‘Oe (Farewell to Thee) is regarded as one of Hawaii’s most common cultural symbols.
In 1893, she temporarily yielded her throne to the United States Government in order to avoid bloodshed.
In 1895, she was arrested and imprisoned after being accused of participating in an attempted counter-revolution. It was during her imprisonment that she formally abdicated her throne.
