Eliza Rosanna Gilbert, Countess of Landsfeld, as she was officially called, was a stunningly attractive Irish-born dancer, actress, and adventurer whose escapades and independent behavior made her a legend of the mid-nineteenth century. She was known as Lola Montez, her stage moniker.
Her outspokenness, rejection of tradition, a knack for publicity, cosmopolitan background, and stunning beauty made her a worldwide phenomenon. She achieved international fame for her unique dancing skills and her romantic relationship with King Louis I (Ludwig I) of Bavaria.
She began her profession as a dancer in 1843.Following her debut, she went on to perform in many prestigious events across the world and is known to have performed with prominent personalities like Alexandre Dumas and Franz Liszt.
She was married to Patrick Hull.
Her parents were Eliza Oliver and Edward Gilbert.
She published a book titled “The Arts of Beauty, Or, Secrets of a Lady's Toilet: With Hints to Gentlemen on the Art of Fascinating”.
When she was 19 years old she eloped with Lieutenant Thomas James to escape a planned marriage with Sir Abraham Lumley, who was sixty years older than her.
