About Lorenzo Sanz
Lorenzo Sanz was a renowned Spanish business tycoon, who was known for serving as the President of Spanish football giants, Real Madrid FC. Sanz was also famous for becoming the owner (between 2006 and 2010) of another big football club in Spain called, Malaga FC.
He was also known for making a fortune in the business of construction and real estate.
Between 1985 and 1995, Sanz served as the director of Real Madrid. He later became the president of the club between 1995 and 2000.
Family
At the time of his death, Sanz was married to María Muñoz. He had two sons, Paco Sanz and Fernando Sanz, who were professional football players. His daughter, Malula, also married a professional footballer by the name of Michel Salgado.
Achievements
Sanz has been credited for bringing immense success to Real Madrid. During his time, the club was able to win several trophies including the UEFA Champions league, which they won (in 1998) for the first time since 1966. Under his presidency, the club went ahead to win another Champions league trophy in 2000.
Death
Sanz passed away (on March 21, 2020) at the age of 76-years-old. He died during hospitalization he was undergoing as a result of being diagnosed with the coronavirus.
Trivia
During his youthful years, he played as a footballer, playing in the position of a goalkeeper for several teams including the Spanish side, Club Deportivo Puerta Bonita.
He was in negotiations to buy the Italian football club, Parma between 2005 and 2006.
Sanz had several legal issues in the late 2000s. For instance, in 2008, he was charged with fraud for attempting to receive payments from a bank using a fake cheque. According to a report by El Pais (a Spanish newspaper) Sanz was also arrested in November 2009 for his attempt to smuggle artwork outside Spain.
He personally funded the transfer of top players, including Predrag Mijatović and Davor Šuker, to Real Mardid.
