About Lou Boudreau
This Hall of Famer did it all, he played, managed and was a broadcaster in Major League Baseball (MLB). Nicknamed "Handsome Lou", Lou Boudreau was a gifted hitter who won the World Series Championship in 1948 and was an eight-time All-Star player.
Early Life
Boudreau was born into a family with French ancestry, he was a two-sport star in his high school, Thornton Township High School in Harvey. He enrolled in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he led the baseball and basketball teams. Boudreau graduated in 1940 and worked as an assistant coach for the Illinois Fighting Illini men's basketball team.
Achievements
Boudreau was signed to the Cleveland Indians and was selected into the All-American first team in 1938. One of the best defenders of his time, he was selected for the All-Star Game for five consecutive seasons from 1940. This 5-foot-11-inch player made history by becoming the youngest to become a manager of a major league team at the age of 24.
Post Retirement
After 15 amazing seasons playing in the MLB, he became a full-time manager for the Boston Red Sox in 1952. Boudreau joined the broadcast team of the Chicago Cubs in 1958. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1970 with an outstanding 77.33% of the vote.
Personal Life
Handsome Lou tied the knot with Della DeRuiter in 1938 and they had four children.
