Career
Whitaker made his first Major League Baseball (MLB) appearance for the Detroit Tigers on September 9, 1977. He played in more than 10 games by the close of the 1977 season and won the American League Rookie of the Year Award. He also received his first of five selections to the American League All-Star Team. By the close of the 1983 season, he was the recipient of several awards, including Tiger of the Year Award by the Detroit Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. He made his last MLB appearance on October 1, 1995.
Honors
He was the winner of the World Series Championship in 1984 and was named American League Rookie of the Year in 1978. He also received the Gold Glove Award three consecutive times – in 1983, 1984, and 1985.
