About Louis Agassiz
Louis Agassiz was a 19th-century Swiss-born scientist who made contributions towards the study of natural science. Such was his impact in the scientific community that he earned the name “Father of Glaciology”.
His early life and education
Born in Mortier to a pastor, the naturalist began his education in the Swiss town of Bienne. He subsequently went to the universities in Zurich, Heidelberg and Munich. Louis went on to acquire a doctor of philosophy from Erlangen and a doctor of medicine from Munich.
His highlights
The past geologist began his career with the study of fishes. He published a brochure titled “a History of the Fresh Water Fishes of Central Europe” (1830), which was printed in parts from 1839-1842. He worked at the University of Neuchatel from 1832-1846, as a professor of natural science. The “father of glaciology” began to study the movements and effects of the glaciers of Switzerland in 1836. He again went to the USA in 1846 for two purposes; to study natural history and geology there and to teach at the Lowell Institute in Boston, Massachusetts.
Trivia
The great scientist has been accused by some scholars of having writings that veer off into white supremacy.
He was married to Cecilie Braun, with whom he had three children. After the death of Cecilie, he married again, to Elizabeth Cabot Cary. Through his daughter Pauline Agassiz Shaw, he was the father-in-law of businessman Quincy Adams Shaw.
Did you know?
Lake Agassiz in North America was named after him. Other famous places and landmarks that bear the scientist’s name include: Agassiz Peak in Arizona, Mount Agassiz in California, and Agassiz Rock in Massachusetts.
Astronomers named a crater on the surface of Mars after him. The crater is known as Mars Crater Agassiz.
He is the founder of the Museum of Comparative Zoology in Harvard.
