About Louis Malle
Louis Malle was active as a film director, producer and screenwriter for four decades. Having debuted professionally in 1954, he first gained attention as a co-director (alongside Jacques Cousteau) and a cinematographer for the 1956 documentary film, “Le Monde du Silence”. He worked on French and English-language films. His best-known works include “Au revoir les enfants”, “My Dinner with Andre”, “Atlantic City” and “Ascenseur pour l’echafaud”.
Family Life
His parents were Pierre Malle and Francoise Beghin. He was married twice: first to actress Anne-Marie Deschodt from 1965 to 1967 and then to actress Candice Bergen from 1980 until his death. Bergen bore him one daughter. He also had two older children from his relationships with Canadian actress Alexandra Stewart and German actress Gila von Weitershausen.
Achievements
Awards he received in his lifetime include the Palme d’Or, the Venice Film Festival’s Special Jury Prize, two Golden Lion awards and several BAFTA Awards.
Death
He died on November 23, 1995 from lymphoma at 63 years old.
