About Louisa May Alcott
Louisa May Alcott took up writing as a form of escape from her family’s financial difficulties. Her first book, “Hospital Sketches”, published in 1863, was a compilation of her experiences as a nurse and typhoid patient at the Union Hospital during the American Civil War.
Her earliest works were sensation novels. Her most popular work, “Little Women”, was published in 1868 and it is modelled around her childhood and that of her sisters.
Family Life
She was born to Abby May, a social worker, and Amos Bronson Alcott, an educator. She had an elder sister, Anna, and two younger sisters: Abigail and Elizabeth. She was never married.
Other Activities
She was involved in feminist and abolitionist causes in her adulthood.
Death
She died on 6 March 1888 aged 55 from a stroke.
