About Lovie Smith
Like most prominent American football coaches, Lovie Smith also began as a player of the sport. Though he couldn’t play in the NFL, Smith performed remarkably well for his high school and college teams.
He began his coaching career after leaving college. In 1980, he was appointed by his former school, Big Sandy High School as a defensive coordinator. The following year, he joined Cascia Hall Preparatory School.
As an NFL coach
Smith coached a number of college teams before he was hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as one of their linebacker coaches. He then joined the St. Louis Rams after serving the Buccaneers for five years. He helped them to win the NFC Championship in 2001.
Three years later, he was named as the head coach of the Chicago Bears. He joined the Houston Texans as the head coach in 2021.
Family
His children with MaryAnne are named Mikal, Miles and Matthew.
Education
After completing his education at Big Sandy High School he joined the University of Tulsa, where he played for their football team.
Awards
He was named the NFL Coach of the Year in 2005. He was named into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.

He’s one of the founders of the charity organization called Lovie and MaryAnne Smith Foundation.
He has also coached the football team of the University of Illinois.
