About Lucius D. Clay
General Lucius Dubignon Clay was a senior United States Army officer most known for his post-World War II administration of occupied Germany. Clay assisted in breaking a supply bottleneck that had slowed Allied forces following the Normandy Invasion and ultimately became a military commander in 1947.
Growing Up
The army officer was raised by his father, Alexander S. Clay. He also enrolled and graduated from West Point in 1918.
Career
From 1937 until 1938, he served as chief engineer in the Philippines under General Douglas MacArthur. Clay was promoted to brigadier general in March 1942 and major general nine months later while serving as the War Department General Staff. He worked as the deputy director for war projects in the War Mobilization and Reconversion Office from 1944 to 1945. The army officer was promoted to Lieutenant General. He served as deputy governor, then military governor, of the American Zone in occupied Germany from 1945 to 1949. After long years of servitude, Clay retired from military service in May 1949.
Personal life
Clay married Marjorie McKeown in 1918. He Died in 1978 and was survived by 2 children.
Awards
He was awarded three Distinguished Service Medals, the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star.
