About Lucretia Garfield
Lucretia Garfield became a national asset for her marriage to James A. Garfield, who would later become the United States’ President in 1881. Due to her husband’s position, she served as the country’s First Lady.
After the murder of her husband in 1881, she took up the responsibility of preserving materials of the former President.
Family
Her father, Zebulon Rudolph is one of the founders of the Western Reserve Eclectic Institute, which would later be known as Hiram College. Her mother was called Arabella Mason Rudolph. She and James had seven kids including Harry Augustus Garfield, a lawyer; James Rudolph Garfield, a politician and lawyer; and Abram Garfield, an architect.
Education
She met her future husband during her time at Geauga Seminary. She later studied at Hiram College.
Trivia
A $350,000 trust fund was created by American businessman Cyrus W. Field to cater for her family after the death of her husband.
