About Ludovico Ariosto
Ludovico Ariosto was an Italian poet best known for writing “Orlando Furioso”, which was a romantic epic. He was also responsible for creating the term “humanism” to bring more focus to the strengths of humanity instead of relying on God.
Background
Ariosto was the oldest of 10 children. Even as a child, he was interested in poetry but decided to study law at the behest of his father. After his father’s death, he was forced to abandon his literary interests to care for his family. Still, he managed to write whenever he could, eventually catching the attention of Cardinal Ippolito d’Este who made him one of the gentlemen in his home. The pair fell out after Ariosto refused to travel to Hungary with him.
Works
Asides his many poems, Ariosto also wrote several plays, including “Cassaria”, “La lena”, “Il negromante”, and “I suppositi”, which became the source of inspiration for William Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew”.
