About Ludwig Feuerbach
Ludwig Andreas Feuerbach was a German philosopher and moralist who influenced Karl Marx. He was known for his humanistic theology.
Family and Education
Feuerbach, the fourth son of prominent lawyer Paul von Feuerbach, dropped out of theology school to study philosophy for two years in Berlin under G.W.F. Hegel. He moved to Erlangen to study natural science in 1828.
Early Career
His first publication, Gedanken über Tod und Unsterblichkeit ("Thoughts on Death and Immortality"), was anonymously published two years later. Feuerbach criticized the notion of personal immortality in this essay, proposing a sort of immortality in which human attributes are absorbed into nature.
Works
Feuerbach proposed that man is his own thought object, and religion is nothing more than a perception of the infinite. The idea that God is just the outer reflection of man's internal character is the outcome of this viewpoint. Feuerbach examined the "real or anthropological nature of religion" in the first half of his work, which affected Marx greatly.
The German philosopher maintained that God's varied facets, such as "a being of intellect", "a moral being or law", "as love", and others, relate to diverse requirements in human nature. In the second portion, he looked at the "false or theoretical nature of religion", arguing that believing in God's presence separate from human life led to believe in revelation and sacraments, both of which are manifestations of religious materialism.
Despite the fact that Feuerbach denied being an atheist, he said that Christianity's God is a figment of the imagination.
