Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a German-American architect widely regarded as one of the greatest architects of the 20th century. He was a pioneer of modern architecture who built famous structures such as the New National Gallery, S.R. Crown Hall, the Lake Shore Drive Apartments and the Seagram Building.
Career
He started his career as an apprentice under renowned architect and designer Peter Behrens and rose to the status of a well-known architect in Germany. In 1937, he left Germany for the United States where he continued his architectural career.
Personal Life
He was married to Adele Auguste Bruhn from 1913 to 1918. He fathered three children with her. He fathered a fourth child out of wedlock.
Trivia
S.R. Crown Hall is considered by many to be his finest work. The building was named a National Historic Landmark in 2001.
