About Luis Aparicio
Nicknamed “Little Louie”, Luis Ernesto Aparicio is a former All-Star baseball player who made a name for himself as the first Venezuelan to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. As a starting shortstop he won the coveted award for the “American Rookie of The Year” in his first Major League Baseball (MLB) season.
Family Life and Career
Following in the footsteps of his father, also a celebrated shortstop, “Little Louie” played for the Maracaibo Gavilanes in 1953 making his debut in the Venezuelan league. At the age of 19, he signed as an amateur free agent with the Chicago White Sox and spent two years in the minor leagues before making his MLB appearance on April 17, 1956
After a standout season with the White Sox he was transferred to the Baltimore Orioles in 1963. He won the World Series championship with the Baltimore Orioles in 1966.
In 1967, he went back to the White Sox. From one Sox to another, he left to join the Red Sox after staying for three seasons in Chicago.
Retirement
He finally hung up his bat after a three year run with the Red Sox, retiring with the shortstop record for games played, double plays turned, and assists.
Achievements
He is recognized for revitalizing the use of the stolen base as an offensive tactic in the American League.
Luis Aparicio was the first Venezuelan to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1984.
In 2003, he was inducted into the Venezuelan Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
Luis Aparicio made it on the writers Donald Honig and Lawrence Ritter’s 100 Greatest Baseball Players of All Time.
The Luis Aparicio Award was established in his honor. The annual award is bestowed upon a Venezuelan baseball player who has distinguished himself in the sport.
