Argentine biochemist and 1970 Nobel Prize winner Luis Federico Leloir ForMemRS was a renowned chemist who rose to fame for discovering the metabolic pathways in lactose.
Growing Up
The chemist Hortensia Aguirre de Leloir and Federico Leloir lived out his life in Argentina and first enrolled in Escuela General San Martín to begin his high school education. He proceeded to Colegio Lacordaire before later graduating from the University of Buenos Aires.
Career
Leloir joined the Department of Medicine at the University of Buenos Aires and began his research on how the body converts carbohydrates into energy in the body. He later found out that carbohydrates entering the body were broken down by nucleotides that produced sugar and were transformed into energy by the body.
The Nobel Prize winner is also known for discovering Galactosemia and coined the word Lactose intolerance.
Awards
The chemist won the Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize in 1967 and Legion of Honor in 1982
