About Luis Suárez Miramontes
Luis Suárez Miramontes was the first Spanish-born soccer player to win the coveted Ballon d'Or after he received the award in 1960. Admired for his shooting abilities and passing techniques, Miramontes played a key role in his country’s success at the European Nations' Cup in 1964. He also played in two FIFA World Cup tournaments.
Club career
The highly-rated Spanish soccer legend started his professional career in 1953 with Deportivo de La Coruña. The following year, he joined CD Condal before moving to FC Barcelona in 1955. During his six years spell with the club, he won both the La Liga and the Copa del Rey twice.
In 1961, he joined Inter Milan where he spent the next nine years of his career. While at Inter, he won the Intercontinental Cup and the European Cup on two occasions. He also helped the team to win three Serie A titles. Before hanging his boots in 1973, he played for Italian side Sampdoria.
As a manager
Since his retirement, the Spaniard has worked as a coach. He’s widely known for his time with teams like Inter Milan, Cagliari and the Spanish national team.
Honors
Some of his personal laurels include the Golden Foot and the Marca Leyenda. In 1964, he was named in UEFA’s “European Championship Team of the Tournament”.
Trivia
His performance earned him the moniker ‘El Arquitecto’, which translates to English as “The Architect”.
Due to his versatility, he was sometimes used at the inside right position.
