Luise Rainer was a famous German-American film actress. Rainer is best remembered as the first person to win two Academy Awards and the first to win it back to back.
Early life
She spent parts of her childhood in Munich, Hamburg, Vienna, and Switzerland. Although she was generally shy growing up, she won several athletic competitions in her school.
Rainer entered acting at age 16. She soon became an excellent stage actress for the Max Reinhardt theatre company. At the beginning of the 1930s, Rainer starred in three German movies. However, in 1935 she signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) and moved to Hollywood.
Acting & Achievements
Rainer's first Hollywood movie role was in the 1935 romantic comedy movie "Escapade." However, her splendid performance as Anna Held in the 1936 movie "The Great Ziegfeld" established her reputation as a great actress. Anna earned the best actress at the Academy Awards for this performance.
In 1937, Rainer gave another thrilling acting performance when she played the role of O-Lan in "The Good Earth. Rainer won her second best actress award at the Academy Awards for this role.
Death & Trivia
She lived for 104 years and died on December 30, 2014. A total of $489,069 was earned from auctioning her memorabilia in 2015.
