About Lyman Hall
Lyman Hall is a preeminent figure in American history. He was a part of America’s “Founding Fathers,” and he signed the “United States Declaration of Independence” on behalf of Georgia. Aside from being a statesman, he also worked as a physician and a clergyman.
Background & Early Life
He was born in Wallingford, Connecticut. He read medicine at Yale College and graduated from the university in 1747. Following his religious background, he served as a clergyman in Bridgeport, Connecticut, from 1749 to 1751.
In 1760, he bought a piece of land in Georgia, where he set up his plantation and continued to practice as a physician. He then moved to South Carolina in 1762 and established himself as a recognized physician.
American Revolution
During the American Revolution, the state of Georgia was initially not represented during the “First Continental Congress.” However, Hall persuaded the parish to send a delegate for the state during the “Second Continental Congress.” His efforts saw him becoming Georgia’s delegate and admission to a Congress seat in 1775.
He was elected as the governor of the state in January 1783 and held the position for a year.
Legacy
"Hall County" in Georgia was named after him.
