About Lytton Strachey
The English biographer and critic Giles Lytton Strachey was well-known for his satire of the Victorian era. His short sketches of heroes like Cardinal Manning, Florence Nightingale, and Thomas Arnold are seen as some of best works.
Early Life
He was born to Sir Richard Strachey and Jane Grant, a British soldier and suffragist, respectively. Strachey, who was raised by an army officer and a woman's rights activist, attended universities like Trinity College, Cambridge and the University of Liverpool while growing up in London.
Career
He lived in London after completing his studies at Cambridge (1899–1903), where he gained notoriety among the Bloomsbury group of intellectuals.
His greatest accomplishment was in biography, though he also published critical essays, particularly on French literature.
He wrote “Elizabeth and Essex” (1928) and “Portraits in Miniature” (1931) after “Queen Victoria” (1921). He developed the critical faculties and gave biographers a sense of form and context.
Despite being vehemently criticized, he is still regarded as one of the greatest humorists and writers in English literature of his era.
Trivia
He was romantically involved with English painter Dora Carrington. He also had a very deep relationship with Ralph Partridge and Roger Senhouse.
On January 21, 1932, he died, aged 51. The cause of death was stomach cancer.
