About Mahala Ashley Dickerson
Mahala Ashley Dickerson was an American lawyer who set a lot of records throughout her life. She was the first black woman to be called into the Alabama State Bar, as well as Alaska’s first African American attorney. She was also the first black woman to serve as president of the National Association of Women Lawyers.
Early Years
The Alabama native attended Fisk University, where she graduated with a degree in sociology. She later attended Howard University School of Law and was one of the four women to graduate in 1948.
Career
Dickerson returned to Alabama to practice law and was admitted to the Alabama State bar in 1948. She was also admitted to the Indiana bar. In 1958, she moved with her family to Alaska, where she opened an office in Anchorage. While there, her most noteworthy case was an equal pay lawsuit. Although she first lost, Dickerson won the appeal.
Death & Honors
In 1994, she received an honorary law degree from the University of Alaska and was named Margaret Brent Women Lawyers of Achievement in 1995. She died in 2007.
