About Mahmood Mamdani
After completing his education in the United States, Mahmood Mamdani went back to his native country, Uganda, and started working as one of the teaching assistants at Makerere University. After seeking refuge in the United Kingdom, Mamdani went to Tanzania to work with the University of Dar es Salaam.
He worked with other institutions before being named the head of the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa in 1998. The Ugandan educationist has also served as Kampala International University’s chancellor, and a professor at Columbia University in the United States. In 2010, he was named the director of Makerere Institute of Social Research.
Family background
Mamdani was born in India and spent some of his childhood in Tanzania. He has been married to Indian filmmaker Mira Nair since 1991 and they are blessed with a son named Zohran Mamdani who would become a politician.
Education
He attended Old Kampala Senior Secondary School before moving to the United States to study at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, the University of Pittsburgh, and Harvard University.
Accolades
Some of his numerous awards are the Herskovits Prize, Lenfest Distinguished Faculty Award, and the Ugandan Diaspora Award. He was made a Fellow of the British Academy in 2017.
Trivia
He has authored many books with some titled “Politics and Class Formation in Uganda” and “Academic Freedom in Africa”.
The Milton Obote-led government withdrew his Ugandan citizenship in 1984.
