About Mangal Pandey
Mangal Pandey was an Indian soldier who was a member of the 34th Bengal Native Infantry. His heroics during the 1857 Indian Rebellion earned him a place in the country’s history books. He was mainly known for his scuffle with Lieutenant Baugh, a highly-ranked officer in the unit, which has been described as the beginning of the rebellion. His bravery has been recognized by past and present Indian governments.
Death
After his fight with the British soldiers, Pandey was arrested and later tried. He was executed in 1857 after he was given a death sentence by the court.
Recognition
In 1984, his image was featured on a postage stamp in India.
The Shaheed Mangal Pandey Maha Udyan Park, which is located in the city of Barrackpore, was named after him.
Trivia
He inspired the 2005 film “Mangal Pandey: The Rising” which featured actors like Rani Mukerji and Aamir Khan.
