About Marcel Mauss
French anthropologist Marcel Mauss was admired for his views on some social topics like gift exchange and magic. Most of his works tried to establish the relationship between social structures and the forms of exchange.
In 1902, he joined the Paris’ Practical School of Higher Studies (École Pratique des Hautes Études) as a professor. Before moving to Collège de France in 1931 to continue his teaching career, Mauss established the Ethnology Institute at the University of Paris.
He also published many books, but was known for his 1925 work entitled “The Gift: Forms and Functions of Exchange in Archaic Societies”.
Family
He was raised by his parents alongside a younger brother. His uncle was the famous French sociologist Émile Durkheim.
Education
He graduated from the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes.
Facts
Mauss influenced some popular personalities such as Claude Lévi-Strauss and Georges Bataille.
Some of his publications were titled “Sociologie et anthropologie” and “Esquisse d'une théorie générale de la magie”.
