The Grammy-winning composer and producer, Marcus Miller is best known for his collaborations with legendary artists like Aretha Franklin, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Chaka Khan, and LL Cool J. The musician is famed for contributing to over 350 albums by nearly 200 different artists.
Early Life
The Brooklyn-born artist grew up in a musical household. Along with playing keyboards and guitar, he was trained to play the clarinet. Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music, Art, and Performing Arts is where he received his diploma.
Career
He is a skilled jazz bassist who first gained notoriety as a member of trumpeter Miles Davis' band in the 1980s. Racking up a long list of session credits, Miller gained popularity as a sought-after musician in the 1970s.
His contributions to Luther Vandross' "Never Too Much" plus his writing, and performance credits on Miles Davis' “Tutu” album are just a few examples of his work as a session musician.
With the release of the album “Suddenly” (1983), he made his debut. He went on to produce more solo albums throughout the years, including “The Sun Don’t Lie”, “Silver Rain”, “Thunder” and Afrodeezia”.
Honors
He won the Grammy Award for “Best Contemporary Jazz Album” in 2002. The award was for his album “M²”. He received the Victoire de France Award (2010).
Trivia
His collaboration with Billy Idol and Frank Sinatra makes him one of the select few musicians in this era to do so.
